Identity theft can primarily be of 5 types; they are:

Credit card thefts: When your card is not swiped in front of you, there are chances that you become a victim of this mode of identity theft. This happens mostly when you pay your restaurant bills with credit cards. To avoid any such situation, you must make sure that you pay the bill directly at the counter.

Driver’s license thefts: Never allow the driver’s license to get out of your possession; keep it in a secret place. If the information available on your driver’s license gets stolen, there are possibilities that the person stealing the information commit driving violations using those facts and you get penalized in turn.

Social security number thefts: This form of identity theft can cause major problems for you. To avoid it, you must disclose your social security number wisely. Never mention the number on forms if not absolutely necessary.

Criminal identity thefts: It has become extremely common for malevolent individuals to commit offenses under false identities. Eventually, when these people get caught, they produce their own identification documents. This means the person, whose identity was used by the crook while committing the crimes will eventually be taken into custody by the police and the actual lawbreaker will stay free.

Medical identity thefts: This is probably the most critical one among the different kinds of identity thefts prevalent in today’s society. Often people practicing high-risk lifestyles don’t go for medical checkups under their own identity. They get the tests done using someone else’s identity to make sure that their medical records stay clean.

Online shopping is certainly the way of the world. Afterall, we people live busy lives and often don’t have time to stop by the store or the mall to pick up the things they need every day. It’s possible to buy everything from groceries to electronics online, so why not take advantage of today’s technological advances? Thanks to clear wireless internet, the whole world is now at our fingertips, literally.

While online shopping can make life easier, it’s important to be safe while shopping online. Take a look at these tips for keeping your identity secure while shopping online.

1. Use a credit card. If possible, use a credit card instead of a debit card. That way, if your identity is breached, you can get your money back. Credit cards are often secured, while debit cards are harder to get your money back in case something goes wrong.

2. Only use secure websites. Look for “https” when you are shopping online. This will tell you that the website is secure and the company has taken measures to ensure your safety.

3. Shop from stores with a brick and mortar store front. You may want to stick to shopping at stores online that also have a physical counterpart. You’ll know the company is legitimate because you are familiar with their brand and may have even shopped in their store before.

4. Take recommendations. If you have friends that do online shopping, ask for recommendations of trustworthy stores. If your friends or family members have had a good experience with an online shop, chances are they will recommend that place.

Are you ready to do some shopping?

In the United States over the past five years there has been an increase in identity theft. It has actually been one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. There are no signs that a decline of identity theft in the future either. There are ways to help prevent identity theft but most consumers are not aware of them. Safeguarding your personal information is the key to preventing identity theft.

Use of a cross shredder to shred all personal documents that you no longer need in your home. One of the main methods criminals will use to steal a person’s identity is known as dumpster diving. This is where the criminal will get your personal information from your garbage.

A criminal will also use a method known as “vishing”. This is when the criminal will call you on the phone and say that they are someone else such as representative of a company. The person will then have you falsely give your personal information with a promise of something.

Most Americans carry their social security information in their wallets. It is really not necessary and is quite unsafe when it comes to identity theft. This practice is not necessary and is best left somewhere in a locked place.

When surfing on the internet there are two practices that should be followed. The first one is that you should never click on a link within a email. Many malicious programs are out there over the internet and can be used to steal ones personal information. Do not use passwords that contain personal information such as a birthdate or pets name.

After high school, many choose to go straight to a college or university. For others, it may be years down the road before the opportunity to go back to school comes up. Either way, you will find that getting a higher education is not a cheap process. In fact, paying for college is one of the biggest causes of debt in America.

When you are considering your schooling options, you will want to look at pricing. You may find that there are two similar schools, but one is more expensive. Though you don’t have to start paying back your student loans until six months after you graduate, you will still want to keep payments in mind. If you need to in the future, you can always get payday loans to help with your payments.

Don’t let your perfect school get away just because it is not the cheapest school you can find. The great thing about student loans is that most of the time, they are willing to work with you on payments. On top of that, they give you time to get a career started in your field before you even have to start paying back the loans.

Don’t forget to look into grants and scholarships. This is free money that can help you pay for school. You won’t ever have to pay back a grant or a scholarship, so apply for as many of them as possible. Some of these you can find through FAFSA, while you can find other great grants and scholarships with a quick Internet search.

Are you thinking about making a charitable donation? Congratulations! Donating is one of the most rewarding things to do in the world. In addition to helping make the world a better place and aiding a good cause, you’ll walk away with the wonderful knowledge that you just helped improve our life on Earth. However, you’ll unfortunately need to be realistic in your aid efforts. Here are some tips on how to choose a reputable charity.

Think Outside the Checkbook

Find out what local charities need. Your old blankets can go to animal shelters. You can knit or crochet blankets for soldiers overseas. You can even donate your car to Kars 4 Kids. Don’t be afraid to donate objects, time, or services instead of money.

Don’t be Afraid of the Little Guys

There’s nothing wrong with donating to “big name” charities. These charities are highly regulated and usually have large operating budgets and equally large mission goals. However, don’t be afraid to research local charities that have a hand in your community. Head out to the local charity office and ask to see their Form 990, a form that most recognized charities are required to submit. This will give you a clear, honest view of the charity’s money trail. Look especially hard at what percentage of their donations go to aid efforts — but remember that all charities have some outside expenses.

Remember, every little bit helps! Try to choose one reputable charity and become intimately acquainted with its needs. You can help meet these needs and spread the word in your community. Just make sure to investigate the charity before you commit to helping them.

Identity theft on the Internet is a cause of concern for gullible Internet surfers. With sophisticated software and even more sophisticated hackers, identity theft is now more pronounced. Cyber terrorism has emerged as a major threat in the free and open architecture of the Internet. Very few organizations have complete understanding of how networks work. Security product manufacturers for the Internet might not have the technical knowledge of how networks work. These impediments create the right breeding ground for Internet hackers, who expose the loopholes in the security mechanisms of the Internet.

More than three-fourth of identity thefts over the Internet happened due to phishing. Phishing is attracting an Internet user to reveal personal information. The most common modus operandi is to create fake websites that look like original ones. These pretentious websites attract gullible Internet users who innocently give out their personal information to the merciless hacker.

For example, a site might ask the user to connect to his/her Gmail account. The user connects to their mail account through this website. But by doing this a very important piece of information is given away. The account’s password. Like this there are numerous instances where gullible users gave out their credit card numbers and even their bank account numbers and passwords.

Phishing is often prevalent in chat rooms. People pretending to be marketers elicit personal information from others in a chat room. But now realization has dawned that chat rooms are just a waste of time. Because half the people in it are for short-term thrills of porn and sex chats. Search engines have a major part to play to control phishing.

Companies, small businesses and even blogs are utilizing the power of Internet surveys to reshape the way they conduct market research. Survey tools can provide extremely valuable insight and feedback from consumers in a vastly more cost effective way than companies in years past had been used to. In fact, affordable survey tools can be found online and used by home based businesses and bloggers; some are even free.

However, the Internet is rife with scams, and unfortunately, some survey tools and survey software available online is nothing more than a bogus method to ensnare unsuspecting individuals. If you’re looking to utilize the benefits of surveys with survey software, use these tips to help you wade through the scams and find the best software fit for your business.

Do your research. If you’ve found a number of potentially beneficial survey software sites, do your homework before you sign up. Use a search engine to find information, reviews, feedback and customer experiences on forums and websites. Reading customer experiences and product reviews are important ways to validate or refute a website and its product.

Know what scams look like. If you familiarize yourself with the patterns and methods scammers use to trap victims, you’ll be more likely to catch a scam if it comes your way. Be wary of websites that make grand claims and have extensive testimonials but little information.

Protect your personals. Survey software scams exist to steal personal details or financial information from unsuspecting visitors through deceptive means. Never provide a website or caller with your credit card number, bank account number or social security number unless you initiated the transaction and can absolutely authenticate the company to whom you are providing it.

There are great sources of survey software on the Internet. As long as you protect yourself from the scams, you’ll only reap the rewards surveys have to offer.

You might not be aware of it, but there are so many weeks phishing for your identity. You might not be aware of the occurrence of fake websites. It is a very common problem these days as criminals will try anything to get your personal information and steal your identity. They can do so in a way that is called phishing.

Briefly, phishing is not hard to understand. For informational purposes, It involves a criminal setting up a website that is the exact replica of a legitimate website. They will even go so far as to copy the logos and information from the legitimate websites page. The criminal will then send out an email that represents the exact email that you would likely receive from the legitimate site. The email directs you to click a link and update your details. After you have done, so you later discover that someone has stolen your identity and hacked into your account. They could also have removed money from the account if it is with a banking institution.

Thus phishing can be quite dangerous as the criminals send emails that resemble a legitimate one. If you are unsure of an email, it is advised to not click any links contained within it and to first contact your bank before you do so. Keep in mind that the legitimate website that you are with will never ask for your personal details through a general email. They would know how dangerous it is for someone to steal your identity or details using this manner.

It is possible to prevent spam, but it does involve the person to be vigilant in the type of email addresses that they open and who they give out their email address to. It has been shown that spam is considered emails that are unsolicited. It is emails that have been sent to you without you requesting it. Some people will receive more spam into their email inbox than regular emails from friends.

Spam is quite annoying because it can clog up the system for an email provider. It can also clog your inbox if you receive too many of them. Therefore, the annoyance that spam creates can make a perfectly good email system operate at below par levels because of the extra spam emails it has to transmit.

Yet as annoying as spam might be, this is not the worse thing about it. Some hackers have used spam in the past to transmit viruses. It can be simple emails from a friend who is infected and the hacker uses the person’s email list to transmit more of the virus. In other cases, viruses can be spread by clicking links in spam emails stating that you have won a trip or a contest. It is quite dangerous to click links in emails if you do not know the sender.

In various instances, the virus that is downloaded from the spam email will go on to infect the person’s computer and wreak havoc. In more severe cases, the malicious software can become installed and transmit your personal information back to the hacker. Thus there is nothing good about spam.

If you have discovered that the software you downloaded as an Internet browser plugin is indeed malicious, then it is best to do all you can to get rid of it. If you are familiar with computers, you can buy a anti-malware program to clean up the software from your hard drive. Depending on how bad the software might be, the cleanup may require more than one anti-virus software application. If you are comfortable around a computer, you may attempt the virus cleanup yourself. Someone who is unsure of what they are doing should take their computer in to a certified repair store. If your computer is still under warranty, you may be able to have the computer cleaned for free or at a reduced price.

If you do decide to have a go at cleaning the computer yourself, this can be quite intense depending on how badly your computer has been infected. One of the first steps will be to try and backup any of your documents or important files that are saved on your computer. This might not be possible if you are unable to access your hard drive. If you can access your hard drive, then try to avoid backing up any files that are applications or .exe as these are more likely to have been infected. Then you can run the anti-virus program and have it remove any malicious files that are detected on your computer. Depending on the program you used as an anti-virus, it can instruct you to backup your hard drive before it undergoes the cleaning process.

One area you thing you should consider doing when making purchases on the Internet would be the use of Internet security software. Using just your computer’s Internet browser is not enough, instead you will need to add other security features such as an anti-virus program or a anti-malware program.

If your computer is a recent model or newly purchased, it should have the anti-virus program installed. It is important to check if this is true. The use of anti-virus programs should not be overlooked. This is a key software installation for any computer, even if you do not plan to go shopping on the Internet. Thus is is always advised to have anti-virus software as safety prevention can always be much easier than the computer.

In the past it was shown that hackers could hide malicious viruses within emails or websites that people visited. These viruses would normally destroy the normal function of the person’s computer. However, some viruses and malware can collect information about the user and send this information back to the hacker.

With a reputable anti-virus software program installed, your computer will be more protected from known viruses and trojans. Some anti-virus programs also monitor the activities of your computer in such a way to alert you when a malicious file is downloaded or when a file is acting in a suspicious manner similar to a virus. Therefore, having an reputable anti-virus software program installed is highly suggested if you plan to do any shopping on the Internet.

One of the worse things you can do as a computer user is download a file that seemed legitimate and later find out it was malware. Quite a number of internet surfers are being infected everyday as they browse the website. These malicious software can quickly take up resident on your computer and instead of remaining there quietly, they can reek havoc. If you are not sure about a particular file, the best thing to do would be to not download it.

Some of the worse type of files that can cause damage to your computer are Internet browser plugins. These plugins may appear as a harmless advertisement for software or a free program that you can use to personalize your desktop or your browser. If the website does not seem like a legitimate one, it might be a good idea to avoid it than risk the consequences later.

Therefore, what happens is that you click download to install the free program and before you know it, your computer is infected. This infection can be something simple as a plugin for your Internet browser that only loads a series of popup windows. Some of these plugin software can also change the browser’s homepage to point to their website and receive more traffic.

Another type of plugin can be a little more dangerous and the software not only infects a multitude of other files on the computer, but also downloads software that is more harmful than itself. This type of software might be hard to get rid of. In some occasions, the malicious software can make copies of itself every time the Internet browser is opened. This is the type of plugin that ma result in all of your computer data having to be erased.

If you are new to shopping online, there are various things you should consider doing before making a purchase. For some people, shopping online might not seem secure. They might be worried about having their details stolen. These details can include information about their bank account, credit card or even their home address. There is a risk but if your computer is protected, then you will be less likely to have your details stolen and can reduce the risk. Thus, if your computer is upgraded with the necessary security features, then you can look forward to better and more secure shopping. These are all the right tips to help you get started with shopping online safely.

One of the areas to consider when looking at the safety of online shopping is the reputation of the website you would like to buy from. It is advised to consider websites that are well known and reputable as opposed to a site that you have never heard before. By doing so, you can decrease your risk of finding a site that has just been setup to steal your information. If you are not familiar with a website’s name, it is best to not buy from that site until you have heard from others you have used it.

Another guideline for online shopping and its safety would be to find ways to reduce the amount of financial details you submit over the Internet. There are quite a number of online payment sites that can be used that allow you to top up your account with money and go shopping. By using an online payment processor, you are able to keep your credit card number safe, but still shop online.

Online bingo is a very popular past time, allowing you to enjoy the thrill of bingo games anytime you want, from your own home. Not only is it great fun, but also most games are cheap to enter, with the chance to win large cash prizes. However, it is important to make sure that you take precautions when using online bingo sites to protect your computer and bank details.

Check that online bingo is legal where you are. There are several states, which have outlawed online gambling. If a bingo site pays out a monetary bonus if you win, then the game is considered online bingo. Make sure that this is legal where you are before you start.

Check that your computer is properly protected. This involves having antivirus and firewall software installed, which monitor your computer for viruses and malicious attacks. Most firewalls will also monitor the websites you visit, and alert you to fake or dangerous websites. Most bingo websites require you to download their software to be able to play, so having up-to-date virus protection is essential, as these files may contain malicious data.

You also need to make sure you only register with reputable bingo sites. Only register with well-known bingo companies, and search for reviews of any bingo company you aren’t sure about. If you come across negative reviews, avoid registering with that website.

Be careful how much information you share with other users of bingo sites. There are benefits to making friends with other regular players, and many bingo sites offer chat rooms, which allow you to socialize while playing. This means you can share your successes and failures, and any good bonuses you have come across. Be careful not to share too much of your information though. Keep information about where you live, your contact details and information about your family to a minimum, as you do not know whom you are talking to.

_

If you are looking for long term or somewhat long term investments, be sure to look into the benefits of a certificate of deposit, known as a CD. A CD is one of the most secure ways to be smart with your saving.

A certificate of deposit works by putting a lump sum of money away for a specified amount of time. Once this time is reached, you can retrieve your money for the fully matured amount. This time span can vary from two months to many years, and the interest rate will vary with this as well. The benefit of this kind of investing is that it is extremely low-risk.

Some of the disadvantages to consider when investing in a certificate of deposit is that once you put the money in the account, you cannot retrieve it until a certain date without a penalty. A penalty for taking the money out before this date of maturity is generally at least two months of interest. However, this penalty can vary from bank to bank.

Different banks also have different policies on if you can add to your certificate of deposit. While it is not typical to allow a person to randomly add money to their certificate of deposit, some banks may have a system where you can have a repeating sum of money taken out of your paycheck that will go directly into your certificate of deposit. Also, while you can get a certificate of deposit anywhere, you will probably receive a much better interest rate if you use a smaller bank.

One of the reasons that a certificate of deposit is so safe is because you are investing in a financial institution instead of investing in a company or other high-risk enterprise. This is one of the greatest benefits of beginning a certificate of deposit.

Finding a place to invest and a form of investment that you are comfortable with is one of the most important decisions you will need to make. Be sure to research your options so that you are the most comfortable with your decision.

If you’re ever had a virus or Trojan on your computer, then you likely understand the need for high-quality security software on your computer. Criminals can use these types of programs to see your sensitive information when you are sharing it online. But if you take precautions, like using a reliable online casino, shopping site or other website, and pair it with good Internet protection software; you can keep your information safe and secure.

Internet security becomes an extremely important aspect of your computer in these situations. While you should always undertake methods to protect your data in the case of a virus, like using backup software/hardware, you want to actively block the more dangerous threats completely.

When you look for an internet security suite, make sure that you have full protection. You need to be protected against viruses on the Internet and in your e-mail account, and you should consider other features, such as a firewall. The program should be constantly updated in order to keep up with the quick developments of viruses and other computer-related threats.

Do some research to look for well-received programs. It isn’t necessary to pay for this type of software; for instance, AVG makes a popular anti-virus software that could be considered. Be aware of measures of protection on your operating system, as you might already have some means present, such as a firewall.

After you find the right program, or set of programs, for your computer, make sure that they are updated on a regular basis. There should be an option to check for updates automatically. Additionally, ensure that you run system scans regularly and back up all sensitive files.

With a few simple steps, you can make your internet surfing much safer. Beware of these real threats and protect yourself and your computer from viruses, malware, and other dangerous online elements. Don’t hesitate to find a quality piece of internet security software.

Savings bonds are a very low-risk form of investment that allow you to support and invest in your government. There are several different types of savings bonds, allowing you to choose the risk and time frame.

Rate of return. The rate of return is generally pretty high for a savings bond. Some savings bonds will double in value at when they have reached maturity, meaning that they are one of the best types in investments. However, the maturity date could be as long as twenty-five years. Other savings bonds will simply gain interest, although they may not completely double in amount. There are several different types of these bonds, and you will need to research them in order to understand the value of the savings bond you already have or would like to purchase. One thing to note is that savings bonds generally do not keep increasing interest after their date of maturity.

Availability. The availability of savings bonds also makes them a good choice for an investment. They can be purchased at basically every financial institution. Every bank will sell these savings bonds, making it a very easy and accessible type of investments. However, you generally cannot purchase whatever amount you want, but must buy the savings bond in certain increments, such as buying three $50 savings bonds.

Different locations. When you buy a savings bond, you can decide if you want to buy a federal savings bond, which invests in the federal government, or you can buy a state or even a local savings bond, called a municipal savings bond. These bond will invest in your local or state government, keeping your money in your area, and allowing you to improve you local government and city. The risk can vary between federal, state, and local bonds, however, so for the most secure savings bond, you will need to do additional research. This is one of the best options about savings bonds, as it gives you the opportunity to safely and securely support the community you work and live in, meaning you will leave a better legacy.

Wondering how to make sure that you are getting the best banking available while not compromising your privacy? Here are some typical things to consider about an account.

Is their online site very well protected? The first and very important thing to consider is how well protected a bank’s online website is. This will be the place that you are entering all of your most important information, so you want to make sure that it is secure. Note that while smaller banks may not have as sophisticated a system online as other banks (meaning you may not be able to do as many things online), smaller banks may also be less targeted than national banks. These considerations vary greatly, so be sure to research the security of your bank or prospective bank.

What can it do for you? Once you feel confident about the security of your account, consider the amenities the bank offers. How much online checking can you do? How long does it take to transfer funds? Do they have convenient locations for you? All of these questions are important.

Is there an annual fee? Banks are now adding a annual fee for keeping a bank account, due to higher costs. There are some ways that you can avoid these expenses, however. Some banks waive the fee if you have a regular daily balance over $1,500. Other banks may also waive this fee if you have a direct deposit that monthly deposits $500 or more.

How can you get the best savings rates? Several banks will give you a better interest rate if you do everything online, as this costs them less overhead. Other ways to get a better rate is to have a higher daily balance, such as over $1,000, or to have an excellent credit score. Be sure to look around when taking into consideration which bank you will use, as smaller banks generally offer better rates.

Wherever you decide to bank, you should always research the banks in your area for the best rates and fees, the most flexibility, and, most importantly, the best security.

In dire economic times, the crime rate tends to increase, and usually, the number one crime is theft. Desperate people turn to burglary in an attempt to steal valuable possessions to sell. Or, criminals may be interested in the property itself such as copper pipes or plating that can be melted and sold for top dollar.

Every property is at risk of break-ins such as these, which is why it is important to have security systems in place. Thwarting criminals from burglarizing your property can be accomplished in a variety of ways.

Alarms

Most burglaries happen in the dead of night, when people are asleep and when robbers can operate unseen. With an alarm system, intruders can be caught in the act. Alarms will alert residents of an attempted break-in as it’s happening, while at the same time scaring off the criminal. Additionally, many alarms alert security personnel who will then notify police.

Surveillance

A security system that really catches perpetrators red handed is a surveillance camera system. Running cameras lets you watch over a property at all times. They document acts of crime and the footage can be used as evidence. They also prevent crimes from occurring as potential burglars choose not to risk getting caught on camera.

People

The most vulnerable properties can be those that are owned by someone who doesn’t live there, whether it’s a single home or an entire residential building. Such properties can sit empty because of construction or vacancies. In this case, the greatest deterrent to property crime is having an authority on site. Property owners should use a property management company for security since they employ people to care for the property. Local companies like Sacramento property management firms or managers in any city will have a greater grasp of the area and what types of crime are affecting neighborhoods.

All properties can be vulnerable, which is why they all need effective security systems.

Many students in school do not consider a secure high-yield savings account, but being wise about your money is something that you should begin doing while you are in school, not after you have graduated.

Why is it a good idea? While you may think that school loans means that you should not start thinking about savings, you should realize that if you are taking out school loans, some school loans do not accrue interest while you are enrolled. This means that you could invest the amount of money you would pay towards a loan now, and instead gain some money.

You do not have to invest in anything risky. Using a high-yield savings account is one of the safest things you can do, and one of the simplest as well. A high-yield savings account can have an interest rate anywhere from 1.1 percent to 1.9 percent. This is much better than the average savings account. The best thing about these accounts is that you have access to the money without penalty, unlike other forms of investment, like a certificate of deposit.

Low minimum deposits. The minimums for these accounts do not have to be very high, either. While the amount varies, it can be as little as one hundred dollars. Not only is the beginning balance able to be low, but you can also easily add on to what you have put into the bank, meaning you can create an excellent investment easily and safely.

Are there risks? The only risk with these accounts is that the money may take a few days longer to withdraw. These accounts are generally run by banks that are run online, which means that you may not have as much quick access to your money as when you put it in the bank. The money may take around three days to given to you. This means that you must have an alternative form of emergency funds, as the money in these accounts will not be easily available. However, the money put into these accounts is still secure, similar to a certificate of deposit.

Looking for an easy way to invest? There are many ways you can put your money to work, and these are some of the top ways.

A certificate of deposit. This is an investment that works by putting a sum of money into an account and deciding on a maturing date. You can choose the amount. You can also choose the maturing date, anywhere from a few months to years. The difficulty with this kind of account is that you cannot access this money until the money has matured without significant penalty.

A mutual fund. This form of investment has a higher rate of return but also a higher risk factor. In order to invest in mutual funds, you entrust your money to an investor, who has a certain collection of investments, called a portfolio. This portfolio may have mostly international or national investments, and may be in different fields as well.

A High-yield savings account. A high-yield savings account is much less accessible than a regular savings account, meaning you cannot as easily retrieve your money. However, it gets a much better rate of return, making it a good option for any extra cash.

Savings bonds. A savings bond is similar to a certificate of deposit in that you put a lump sum of money down, and then can collect it again after it has matured. Savings bonds are generally long term investments as well.

Individual Retirement Account. An IRA is a certain type of account that you can begin at any time, but which you cannot access without penalty until you are at least fifty-five years old. However, unlike a certificate of deposit or a savings bond, you are able to add money to this account periodically. The more difficult part of this type of investment is that it is extremely long term. If you are looking to invest your money to save for retirement, this is the investment you should be interested in. If you are merely looking to invest short term, trying a high yield savings account or certificate of deposit may be your best option.

Building credit is no longer as easy as it used to be, as many companies are much more reserved in who they allow credit cards. If you are trying to begin building credit but do not know where to begin, try these tips.

Use a credit card responsibly. Getting a credit card is a responsibility that will determine your credit score. The best way to build credit with a credit card is by putting some large expenses on your card, and then paying them off completely right away. If you are late on your credit card bill, your credit score will be negatively affected. If you simply pay the minimum on your credit card, your credit card will only improve at a minimum rate. However, constantly paying off the entirety of your credit card bill will greatly improve your credit. To be able to do this, however, you must only use your credit card on purchases that you could pay for with a debit card or with cash, ensuring that you never spend more than you can afford.

Pay your bills on time. If you are having trouble getting a credit card, one of the best ways that you can build credit is by simply paying your regular bills on time. Living expenses like rent, a mortgage, electricity, a cell phone, and internet are bills that actually do affect your credit score. Late payments will negatively affect your score, while timely payments will help it. Therefore, always being responsible with these bills is important in order to build a good credit score.

Get pre-paid credit card. If you want to improve your score even more, but either cannot get approved for a card or do not want to use one, you can always get a pre-paid credit card. This works like a debit card, where you put a specific amount on the card and then use it. This guarantees that you will not spend more than you have, but can also slowly improve your credit score. If you are trying to improve your credit score, these suggestions may help you.

People are using credit cards and debit cards to make purchases more than they use cash now. With such a large amount of usage of these cards it is vital to know how to keep the details of your cards safe. There are some basic things you can to to make sure that no one gets a hold of your card or their information.

Make sure your PIN numbers stay private. This is one of the most important steps you can take to fend off card fraud. This means more than just not telling anyone your number though. It also means blocking your hand when you are entering your number at an ATM machine or in a store. It also means you need to think carefully before you choose your number. Don’t choose anything obvious such as birthdays.

Always guard cards. Never let someone take your card out of your sight. It is also safer to carry only the cards you need. If you don’t plan on using a card, keep it at home. If you have several cards, check frequently to make sure that you have all of them.

Always check monthly statements. Make sure you recognize all the transactions that are on the statements. If there is anything you don’t recognize, call the bank immediately to let them know.

Think twice before entering your card number anywhere. Use only secure computers if you are shopping online, and make sure they have security software installed that is up to date. Only shop at online retailers that you know, and make sure it is a secure website.

Be careful at ATM machines. Look for signs of tampering before entering your pin. It is safer to use machines inside banks or other buildings than freestanding ones, or ATM’s that are outside. Cover your hand as you enter the PIN. Be as discreet as possible, and make sure that the transaction is complete before you walk away.

Social networking is used and enjoyed by millions of people around the world. People are meeting new people, talking to old friends, and sharing photo’s and details of their life on the internet. The problem with these social networking sites is that many people are not thinking about the vast number of people that have access to the information they are posting online.

One of they ways you can help keep your information private is to set your profile to private. Each site has their own way of setting privacy, and it is important to take advantage of any privacy settings you can. Social networking is not going anywhere, and it is probably only going to get bigger, it is important to protect yourself and your information.

You can block your profile from being seen by anyone unless you agree to it. While this is an important step in protecting yourself, it is also important to be discriminating in who you choose to see it. If you are opening up your profile to several people you met in a bar last night that you now consider your friends, it is really not more safe than allowing a group of strangers into your personal life.

A better way to protect yourself is to keep private information off the internet and social networking sites. Do not add your address, phone number, or email address to your page. You can also further protect yourself by refraining from opening any links you see on Facebook or other sites. This is extremely important if they are posted by someone you don’t really know. Just like spam in e-mails, spam and phishing can be spread throughout these sites as well.

There is no reason to be afraid of social networking. It is a great way to keep in touch with people, and to promote a business. It is just important to take the necessary precautions to keep your information safe.

We used to order items from a paper catalog if we didn’t feel like going out to the stores. Now those catalogs are all online so when we don’t want to go out we just shop from our computers. Shopping online is relatively safe, but there are some things you should look for to make sure you are buying from a legitimate company.

Take a good look at the website. It is easy to use? Can you find products easily and is there only relevant information on the page? People looking to scam often stuff their sites with keywords and unnecessary information. You can also look for reviews on the company. Keep in mind that one or two bad reviews does not make a bad company. You can’t always please everyone, but if a company is riddled with bad reviews you might want to turn to another company. There are also certain comments you should take notice of. If there are bad reviews regarding problems receiving the product, problems receiving refunds, or not responding to emails, you should probably take your business elsewhere.

Make sure there is contact information. Even try calling the number they give to make sure there is a person on the other end ready to help you.

To help keep your personal information safe check to see if the company has some kind of privacy statement. This will ensure that they will not sell your email address to other marketers. A privacy statement will state that they will keep your personal information private and confidential.

Another detail to look at is how long the company has been in business. It may also be a good idea to check to see if they are only an online store or if they also have brick and mortar locations. The longer a company has been in business, the more likely you are to be safer making a purchase.

Antivirus software is used by almost all computer users to protect their computers from viruses. There are many different companies that offer antivirus software. Some of them are offered for free and others need to be purchased. It is important to have a good software and one that will ensure your safety.

Here are a few of the best rated software systems available.

G Data Antivirus 2010. This is one of the best companies as far as detecting viruses. The reason for this is because they use two different systems to look for viruses. Those who use G Data also find that they have less problems with the software picking non existent problems.

Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition. More often than not, free antivirus protection is not as good as one that needs to be purchased, but the Panda Cloud Free edition offers an excellent malware detection.

Double Anti-Spy Professional. This is another one of the best antivirus protections that uses more than one engine. It will first scan with one engine and then it will scan using the other. One thing to keep in mind with this one is that it needs two separate updates.

Webroot Antivirus with Spy Sweeper. This antivirus software is one of the best at keeping things simple. It has an automatic update, and it will scan your system when it is idle. All the details are kept hidden unless you want to see them. You can decide what type of view you want to choose from a basic view to an expert or intermediate.

Ad Aware and Webroot are the two systems that offer some of the best overall protection. They are able to clean up systems that have been infected with malware, and are also the most effective in keeping malware from infecting systems.

By posing as AOL representatives, they contacted members with emails requesting their login information. This allowed the hackers to continue using AOL’s system by hijacking accounts owned by other people. Today, the problem of spam has only gotten worse.

Today the typical computer user will receive several types of spam throughout a week or month. Popular types of spam include

•Phishing schemes
•Trojan viruses
•Spyware

Phishing involves sending desperate emails to thousands of people, hoping that a handful will respond. The emails often request money and promise significant rewards. Of course, the phishing criminals really just take more and more money while the victim never receives any compensation.

Other spam can contain Trojan viruses and spyware. These are particularly problematic in today’s high-tech world because so many people keep sensitive information on their computers. When you accidentally download spyware from a spam email, you set yourself as a victim of fraud and identity theft. Hackers use spyware to gather bank account, email and credit card information that allows them to gain access to your money, or start new accounts under your name.

Viruses cause similar problems by gathering information found on your computer or turning your computer into a slave that works for the hacker instead of you.

Investing in quality antivirus software such as PC Tools Antivirus is the best way to protect yourself from the dangers of spam. PC Tools Antivirus can scan your emails to make sure they do not contain any hidden files. PC Tools Antivirus can also scan your whole computer to locate programs and eliminate them before they help cyber-criminals steal your private information

Some people have literally made it their life’s work to figure out how to override, get around, break through, and otherwise compromise computer security measures. For them, improved or upgraded security measures just present another challenge to be accepted and conquered.

Why not enter a career that can be just as challenging by earning your degree in computer security and perhaps be the one that someday creates a security method that can’t be penetrated? If you pursue majors such as Computer Science and Computer Engineering, this can very well happen. These are only two areas of study that can help you enter the world of computer security.

You may have thought about earning a degree in computer-related studies, but for different reasons cannot attend a traditional university or college. However, it may be the issue of computer security that keeps you from considering those places that offer online degrees.

You know that if you do choose an online college, you will have to provide some personal information in order to register and make payment arrangements. And, you may wonder if the computer security measures in place on your computer and that of the online college are strong enough to protect this information.

Fortunately, there are secure online colleges which make constant updates and changes to their computer security methods to ensure that your information is kept safe. These colleges provide information on their methods either on the website home page or through a link, which allows you to see exactly what is done to ensure computer security.

Consider this: If you choose one of the secure online colleges for your online degrees (it may be so easy to earn them since you can work at your own pace that you decide to go for more than one), depending on your academic performance, that online college may choose you to begin your future in computer security right there at their college.

A firewall is type of computer program or a type of hardware on a computer that monitors a network and blocks access to your computer that is not authorized. A firewall will make sure that the outside world can not get into your computer unless you say it can.

There are two kinds of firewalls. A software firewall is a program that you can run on your computer. It will watch everything that comes into your computer. There are several different manufacturers that make firewall software. There are also hardware firewalls that are build right into devices such at networking and routers. These hardware firewalls will watch what happens between the internet and the device, but not the traffic between computers inside a network.

If you don’t have a firewall your computer and your identiy is vulnerable. Your computer could be infected without you even knowing it within just minutes of going on the internet.

It may also be a good idea to use not only a hardware firewall, but also a third party add on. These add on programs can add even more protection by blocking not only what comes in to your computer but also blocking certain connections from another computer. This keeps data from going between computers without your permission. This is beneficial in situations where there are several users on a computer or a network who may not be conscious of security. If you have kids who don’t think about the harm that can come to a computer from certain websites it may be a good idea to have extra protection.

Firewall protection can be adjusted as you come across websites and other applications and find they are safe. It is always better to have it blocked at first and then look into it and allow it if it is safe.

This may be hard to believe, but your money and your identity are at a higher risk of being stolen if you recieve statements in the mail. This includes your bank statements and your household bills. Going completely paperless can not only save you money it can actually make you safer.

Experts have always said that the mail is not a safe way to send personal and financial information. Paper statements in the mail are at a high risk of being intercepted by thieves who can then get your personal information and use it to steal your identity. This can happen right at your own mailbox or in the trash after it leaves your home. There are steps you can take to make it safe such as mailboxes that lock or shredding all paper before it leaves your house, but going completely paperless is even safer.

Banks and companies who have online bill pay have spent a lot of time and a lot of money on making paperless transactions safe. Along with these safety measures you can also take a few steps to keep yourself safe as well. If you are ready to get rid of the paper trail and go paperless it it not difficult to do, but there are a few things you want to to to make sure you are safe.

First, make sure you have a good firewall and antivirus on your computer. It is also important to make sure these are updated on a regular basis. You should also keep an eye on all of your accounts. This means monitoring them on a weekly basis to make sure that they are all in order. E-mail alerts are also a great tool for keeping you in the loop. You can sign up to have an email sent if anything fishy happens with your account.

Online gambling and gaming requires the use of a lot of personal information. After all, you can’t get money from these online casinos without first placing a bet with your own money. This will require you to submit very sensitive personal information like credit card numbers and your personal address to a website. This is very personal information that, should it fall in the wrong hands, could create a nightmare situation. That is why it is important to protect your information and identity when participating in online casino games. Here are some steps that you should take to avoid letting your personal information fall into the wrong hands.

Create a Separate Email Address

Online casino players will often create a separate email address so that all spam and other information will not go to their personal account. This will also protect you against someone hacking into your email. Should someone hack your email address, they only have limited information and no access to important personal information.

Use a Credit Card with Fraud Protection

Always use a credit card that has fraud protection when purchasing credits for an online casino game. Without fraud protection, you will be responsible for all purchases made on your credit card, even if they are fraudulent. If you use a credit card that is protected with fraud protection, you will be able to report any purchases that were not authorized by you. Your credit card will remove them from your card so you are not responsible for them.

Even with the most extreme caution, online gambling can be dangerous. If after taking all of these precautions you still feel nervous about your personal information, it might be a good idea to give up online gambling and stick to playing poker with your friends around one of your custom poker tables. In the end, at least you know your friends won’t steal your identity!

There are many ways that criminals can get a hold of someones identity and use the information to steal from you and rack up your bills. There are some simple steps you can take to keep your identity safe.

Keep all of your personal information private. Never give out your credit card information to anyone calling for it or asking for it by email. Your bank already has this informations so they would never ask for it.

Know your credit cards and account numbers. If you keep an accurate inventory of what you have in your wallet you will know exactly who to call if it is stolen. It is also a good idea to keep your social security card at home or in a safe. Do not keep anything with your social security number on it in your wallet.

Keep track of all your credit card transactions. Look at your statements regularly to make sure no one is using your card that you don’t know about. If something does happen, the sooner your catch it the easier it is to clear up any problems.

Always use your home computer for any online transactions. Public computers are not a secure. If you have a hard wired computer at home it is also more secure than a wireless connection.

Make sure no one is standing close to you when you use an ATM. Never write down your PIN number, and make sure you always take your reciept from the ATM machine.

Shred all bills and financial statements once you are done with them if they have your personal information on them.

Don’t open emails or email attachments from people you don’t know. It is also a good idea to be wary of any attachments you are not expecting.

Ignore pop ups on your computer. Even batter, set your browser to block them so you don’t even get them.

Spam is a growing epidemic with no signs of slowing down. We have all recieved spam emails in our inboxes, but how many people realize that these email can be more than just a nusiance taking up space?

Spam has been around for almost as long as email, and internet users recieve an average of over 3,000 spam email every year. Most of the time users will just delete the emails and move on. The problem is that spam can be more than just unsolicited email, it can often contain viruses and other malicious spyware. These viruses can come in the form of an attachment within the email or a link in the email. Once the user opens the attachment or clicks on the link, a virus can download on their computer.

These malicious tactics have been around for a long time, and have successfully infected millions of computers. Even though we know about them and can recognize them in most cases, they are still working. The issue is that spam is growing and evolving just as fast as the programs that we use to protect us against them. Spammers are find ways to get past security measures and ways to trick users into opening them. It is not uncommon for spammers to disguise email messages and make them appear to be from people and institutions that users would trust.

Identifying spam and keeping their people safe is a huge undertaking for many companies. They not only need to make sure viruses don’t infect their whole network, but they also need to keep their networks free from the thousands of spam emails their users get each day.

Spam is not only a nusiance, it is also a security risk for many users and a huge expense for businesses. As with all internet use it is important to make sure you are taking all necessary steps to keep your personal information safe.

Keyloggers are a huge risk for many computer users. They are quickly becoming one of the most widely used tool for cybercrime. Keyloggers are programs or devices that attch to a hard drive that can record each keystroke that a user types on a keyboard.

Keyloggers are used by criminals who commit their crimes through computers. They are used to record the keystrokes you use to log into secure websites, credit card numbers, and any other personal information. This information can be recorded and sent to hackers who use it for identity theft.

One of the big concerns is the growing number of keylogging tools. Not only are they growing in numbers, they are also becoming more sophisticated. Once they are attached to a computer, they can not only track keystrokes, but they can also track the websites that users have gone to. Many of the cyber criminals are looking for the personal information that users are entering into their financial institutions and banks. Once the information is recorded by the program, hackers can then go in to your personal accounts and steal your money.

There are a few different ways your computer can become infected with a keystroke logging device. It is possible to go to an infected website and it will download from there. It can also be downloaded from an email, or from clicking on a link within an email.

The best way to protect yourself from this malicious keylogging software is to make sure your anti virus software is up to date at all times. It is also important to make sure all of your other software is up to date including windows, and other applications that can help to recognise phishing emails. You can also protect yourself by not clicking on links in emails that you are not familiar with.

Xvid is one of the open source software that is found on the market. It is a library for video codec and it follows the MPEG-4 format style. It is software that operates on different types of operation systems and also different hardware systems. In order to use it successfully one needs to set up the right privacy settings on the program being used. It requires the system to assemble the source codes for the particular platform that is being used and then the codec should then be integrated to the operating system that is being used.

The compilation of the Xvid software can be done on many different platforms and this is mainly because the packages for the binary installers that are appropriate are usually third party maintained. Considering the fact that this is software available for free on the internet there are a number of risks that are associated with it like malware and spyware and this requires one to create the necessary firewall for the system’s protection.

It is important to ensure that before downloading the Xvid the site should be reputable with no known causes of viruses. One can also install the latest available anti-virus in the market which will help in the protection of unwanted virus infections to the computer system. It should be able to automatically detect any wrong thing and stop the download as soon as possible. One will be able to enjoy a stress free compression and decompression of their video files. This makes it perfect for enhanced quality of the video files and enjoyment of the download at a much faster pace.

We all have it, or we should all have it. Anti virus software is loaded on almost every computer in the world in order to keep the computer safe from viruses and other malicious software. Most of us load it, and then stop thinking about it until we either get a notice that a page is blocked because it may harm our computer, or we need to update it. But how does it work? How does it know what to block and what to let you look at?

There are two different ways that most anti virus software works. One is that it looks at files and compares it to a virus dictionary that has a list of known viruses. They other way anti virus software works is that it can find behavior from programs that appear suspicious, which may be an indication of an infection.

The virus dictionary is a list of known viruses that have been input by the company that produces the anti virus software. The software searches for the codes and if any piece of the file matches any of the viruses listed in the dictionary, the anti virus software can either separate it and keep it from other files so it can not infect them and spread throughout the computer, or it can just deletes it. There are some anti virus programs that can also repair the infected file by removing the virus.

When you get noticed to update your anti virus software the update it adding viruses to the dictionary. It is important to do this as soon as you get the notice because new viruses are being developed as well as being detected all the time. In order for this method to work anti-virus software developers need to try to stay one step ahead of the hackers.

Although financial institutions do their part to keep you safe when you pay your bills online, there are also some things you can do to make sure you stay safe as well.

Don’t click on a link within an email to get to a bank or financial website. There are some emails out there that are made to look like they are coming from your bank. These are actually malicious emails that will grab your password and other information once you get to the banks website and log in.

Never trust an email that is asking for personal information. Even if the email appears to be coming from a source they you know, there is a good chance that it is not. It is not difficult for spammers to make an email address look like it is coming from a legitimate bank. If you are unsure, call your bank and ask.

Only use your home computer to pay your bills. Don’t use public computers or work computers to make personal transactions that will contain your personal information. It is possible that they could have programs that record keystrokes and then spammers could remotely retrieve your credit card information or your social security number.

Scan your computer frequently for viruses. It may not be a bad idea to scan your computer every time you are going to be doing any banking online. Find a good scanner that will check for programs that will be able to find keyloggers. It is very important to make sure you are getting a scanner from a reputable source so you don’t actually install spyware on your computer by mistake.

Online banking is convienent and safe as long as you take the necessary steps. There is always the chance that you could run into a problem of having your information stolen, but if you bank online correctly the risks are very minimal.

Millions of people do most of their shopping online. It has become an everyday occurance for many shoppers around the world. Although we all do it, we also wonder if we are jepoardizing our personal security when we shop online. If you are a frequent shopper, there are a few steps you can take to make sure you are safe.

Stick with the bigger names. The bigger reputable companies that you know about will be safer than obscure companies that you have never heard about. If a company that you have never heard of offers a deal that is to good to be true, then it probably is.

If you decide to purchase something from a company you don’t know, do some research on them. Make sure they have an 800 number you can call, and call it. make sure you can talk to a person there and ask about their privacy policy.

The checkout page should read “https” and not just “http”. There should also be a key or a padlock that is closed on the page. This lets you know that your information will be encrypted. If you don’t see these things do not enter your credit card information.

Shop with a credit card. The safest method of payment online is a credit card. The worst thing you can use is a debit card. Most credit cards have some kind of protection, but since debit cards grab money right from your account there is a chance you may never see it again. You can also dispute charges on a credit card.

Don’t give out information that is not necessary. If you are asked to give out your social security number or date of birth when you check out, the site may be trying to get your personal information to use.

Online shopping can be safe if you are careful and take the steps to make sure your personal information is safe.

I was out Christmas shopping this afternoon with my son, Peter, who is five years old, and was suddenly struck with the thought that one day he will be grown and on his own. Thoughts such as these often hit parents from time to time but with him entering kindergarten this year, I realize that he really is growing up. My husband and I have seriously been discussing the topic of doing some investing for our family, and we have finally made the first attempts at getting started with a consultation with a financial advisor.

It really is a blessing to be thinking on the lines of family investments for our family because just one short year ago, our circumstances would have prevented us from even contemplating this idea. My husband was dealing with some serious addiction issues that were not only affecting our immediate family, but also members of our external families. With love and support from everyone and those at TheCyn.com, he is finally on the path of recovery and now is a very productive member of society once again. I truly am thankful for my family and it is great to start thinking along the lines of providing the best future for all of us with some wise investments. We have set up an appointment to talk to the financial advisor this afternoon.
He reassured us that he had loads of valuable information on low-cost investment plans that would fit right into out budget. He also said that as our financial situation get more stable, we can invest more money, which may result in getting greater returns on the dollar. Our advisor also said he would help us focus more on setting a family budget, which will free up additional funds for our family. It’s great to be in the place where we are placing family priorities first.

Public wi-fi spots seem to be everywhere these days. More and more often, people use them as a place to do their private business, have meetings with others, or simply surf the web while sipping on a cup of coffee. What many are not aware of is how easy it is for hackers to grab information off of a wi-fi connection, obtaining users passwords with the click of a mouse.

Programs are available for anyone, even those who haven’t got the slightest ability to hack, to grab cookies from the wi-fi stream. While this doesn’t necessarily give the thief the actual passwords, it does enable them to log into the sites that the original user was accessing. It takes very little to plug the cookies into a browser and then log into the websites. The thief can then post whatever they feel like onto a Facebook page or rip off a bank account. And if said thief has used another public wi-fi access point, there is no direct evidence that can trace back to them. It’s practically a perfect crime.

The only way to avoid having passwords ripped off is to not log into secured sites while on public access. Don’t pay bills, don’t log onto social network sites, don’t do any shopping. If there’s an uncertainty about which sites are OK, check the URL. If there’s https:// before the site name, don’t log in. The S denotes a secured site, requiring a password to log in with. And this is the point where trouble can start.

Not being able to log into a secured site at a public node is certainly an inconvenience. But until a solution to the problem is created, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Don’t open the door to identity theft by a lapse in judgment.

Viruses happen to everyone, even the pros. Sometimes the anti-virus software didn’t update like it should have and something slipped past. Or the anti-viral did find the invader but didn’t delete it completely. More often than not, a virus is written to keep it from being deleted by the user, and can even defeat software designed to remove it. At that point, it may seem like completely getting rid of the infection is almost next to impossible.

In fact, it’s not that hard at all. There are many programs out on the market that can get down to the bare bones of the operating system in order to permanently delete the malware. Begin researching by asking a computer tech what they prefer. No two answers may be alike, but eventually there will be an overlap in what techs like to use. Listen to what individuals have to say and make the decision from there.

Obviously time is of the essence when it comes to getting rid of an infection. There may not be enough of it to go seek out a program for removal. In this situation, a little knowledge can go a long way. A Windows based PC can boot up in safe mode, which will prevent the virus from loading while allowing all of the programs essential for basic operation to load up. This is the perfect point at which to get rid of the virus.

Start by turning on the computer and holding down the F5 key. The system will then put up a prompt asking if it should be booted in regular or safe mode. Select safe mode. Once the desktop appears, load the program that removes malware. Spybot Search and Destroy is a good choice for this operation. The removal software will be able to find the malware and remove it from the system. Reboot the computer into regular mode and surf safely.

The one thing most responsible for defeating a computer’s security is the user, strange as this may seem. All it takes is clicking on a link that contains a trojan or a keylogger to mess up a system. Most of the time, these arrive in official looking emails, claiming that there’s something in it that needs to be taken care of. Usually these show up something other than a phishing email, since the intent is to either spread more copies of a program or to trap passwords.

Trojans are probably the most clever creation hackers have ever devised. They look like they’re a program that can do some good on a computer, such as cleaning up viruses and malware. It presents the user with an interface that looks legitimate. What’s really going on is that while the trojan is presenting an innocent face, it’s really spreading all kinds of garbage around on the hard drive. Hence the term trojan, as in the Trojan horse from mythology. Damage can range from annoying advertising that’s almost impossible to eliminate to being part of a denial of service attack.

Keyloggers tend to get into computers through trojans or other forms of viruses. There is no one set method for how a user gets them, making it difficult to track back where it originated from. They work insidiously on the computer, tracking the keystrokes of the unsuspecting user. Unlike a standard trojan, a keylogger runs in the background, never making its presence known. By the time the user discovers that they’ve been hacked, it’s too late. Every account that was logged into is now open to the hacker behind the logger. The only hope to avert complete disaster is that the sensitive websites have strong security on their end and can tell when a user has been hacked.

A firewall can only do so much for protecting a computer. Certainly it keeps the outside world away from an individual system by being a passive form of security. Malware that tries to infect a computer will get turned away by one that’s behind a firewall. It allows for safe Internet surfing, keeping programs from installing itself under the radar. Woe betide the user who has theirs turned off while visiting sketchy websites.

However, the firewall is a passive thing. Meaning that it takes very little for it to be breached. And not necessarily breached by an attack. The user who blindly downloads strange files onto their system without checking first is the most vulnerable. All it takes is a couple of clicks of the mouse by saying Yes to an install, and it’s game over. So always make sure to download from safe, well-known sites like those that offer open source programs like FileZilla for FTP and xvid for media viewing.

That is not to say never download anything from the Internet. Many useful programs are out there for use. Nor do they always have to be paid for. This can lull a user into a false sense of security by assuming that if it’s free, it must be OK. Again, this is a fatal assumption to make. Only download from an unknown source that checks out to be legit. It takes only a few seconds of an Internet search to find out if it’s for real and when you visit sites like File Zilla for example you can read documentation that it is a safe site. Sites whose only purpose of existence is to infect computers are busted time and time again on blogs and forums. There is no fury like a burned user. The same goes for if a site is on the up and up.

What it comes down to is, be a smart user. If a website sends up a flag, listen to instinct. Interrupt the train of thought and go do some research. Who knows, a few seconds worth of typing and reading may save hours and days of frustration.

Although most people have gone to paying their bills online there are still some risks associated with doing just that. Phishing and false websites that claim to be the company you are paying are just two of the dangers out there. However, if you pay a little attention and play things safe it lessons those risks by a great amount, and the good thing is these safe things are simple and easy. Everyone knows that checks are becoming slowly obsolete, so they take their credit cards out and start typing. A great word of advice is: don’t ever auto-save your log in or password. Always pay your bills from your home computer. Taking your laptop to the nearest fast food chain restaurant or to that great coffee house is a bad idea when it comes to paying bills. Even criminals have started to become incredibly computer savvy.

Smartphones are also a weakness when paying bills online. You should never be in public when paying a bill, it’s just too easy for someone to copy down your information and snatch it right from the air waves. Make sure that you update your browser when it’s time, the security options will be up to date also when you do this. You know to change your password frequently, roughly every two to three months, but how often do you do it? Start doing it, because you never know who is phishing. Auto-complete for a URL is also a bad idea. Again, phishing is a problem.

Make sure you are secure by looking for an “https” not an “http” at the beginning of the URL and keep an eye out for the little padlock. The good news is that paying your bills online and making sure to take care of these few items might actually save you from any possible identity theft.

It is common knowledge that a hot forehead indicates a fever, a runny nose is symptomatic of a cold, a headache can denote dehydration. Everyone can recognize simple symptoms of human illnesses. Less known however, are the symptoms of computer ills. Some of them include a slow-down in processing speed, the appearance lots of pop-ups, the routing of the user to unrequested webpages. When this starts to happen, you can be very confident your computer is sick. The chances are very good that it has a virus.

What are computer viruses? They are malware (i.e. undesired) programs that can copy themselves onto other computers. They can do anything that any “normal” program can do. After all, that is what they are, evil programs.

When computers were first becoming popular in the 1980s, viruses originated as mere accidents caused by kinks in the programming. Later, as the computer industry evolved and became more widespread, viruses were often created as practical jokes. However, the internet and email didn’t exist then, so there was no easy method for viruses to spread. You literally had to put an infected disk into a computer and download the content in order to infect it.

Now though, viruses pose a real threat to the functionality of computers and the security of personal information. The primary reason for this is that it is so easy to spread them. Email and the internet form the perfect breeding ground. The second reason is that they are not accidents anymore and they are not harmless jokes. They can stop normal programs from functioning, copy and steal personal information (such as login IDs, passwords, etc.), track internet usage and cause ads to pop up related to that usage.

One of the best ways to avoid viruses is by installing an anti-virus program, using a limited user account rather than an administrative account, and beinging very careful about downloading and installing content from the internet and emails.

If you have ever bought anything from an online store then you know how convenient it can be to automatically chose an item and have it shipped to your front door. The question remains though is it really more convenient than shopping at a real, brick and mortar store. One of the disadvantages to online shopping is that there are no sales assistants or customer service representatives to physically, personally talk to and have them answer any questions face to face. There is also the possibility that any item that is purchased can come to your front door broken. It has happened.

Convenience, however, isn’t defined by the lack of a personable sales assistant. This problem is easily solved by the fact that most online store have a live chat assistant that you can ask questions to. Less usage of gasoline to go back and forth to a department store is a bonus when it comes to online shopping. So is the lack of headaches and crowds. One of the best advantages to online shopping is the ability to park yourself in your desk chair and not have to fight for a parking space at the mall or department store.

All of this adds up to one thing. Online shopping is a real convenience. If you are a savvy computer expert you know that there are things to be considered about online shopping. There are safety risks and credit card information that can be had. This, however, is not an excuse. The risk to personal and financial safety is just as bad shopping person to person. So, is online shopping any more convenient? Sure it is! Is it anymore safe than getting into a car, heading down the highway, and shopping in a building? Not really. There are dangers no matter where you shop. It’s just a lot more quiet from your desk.

Home security is no laughing matter. When it comes to protecting your family and loved ones against burglary or injury it’s scary to think that there are so many scams out there. When buying a home security system there are question that every consumer needs to ask. If you install one yourself or have a professional come in and do it for you there are assessments and checks that need to happen. Going over your home with a fine toothed comb, looking for access points that most criminals might use is a good way to get started. Make a list for yourself of these likely points of entry. For professional purposes share this list with the installer.

Always check out the company from which you are buying this device. Make sure they have the necessary tools and equipment to replace small items that might break or get broken in the event that something should happen to it. Go through the owners manual or read some reviews on the product you are thinking of buying. Become familiar with it, and know it’s faults and good points. This will help if anything goes awry. There is a silver lining to all of this research and bargain hunting. Once you system is placed into your home you can relax.

The possibility that someone will break into your home or hurt a loved one is slim after that alarm goes off. Hearing the alarm will deter assailants and burglars. Safety is a number one rule in any household. Remember to ask yourself some question: How safe can my home really be? Is there anything you can do to make you home safer? The feel better when the answer is yes and you find out that your home is safer because you took action instead of waiting.

Computer security should be a priority for any computer owner. The prevalent use of public wi-fi spots, home wi-fi and just surfing the net in general opens up the computer to all sorts of potential problems. Trojans, key loggers, phishing, and wi-fi sniffers are the most commonly used methods by hackers to get sensitive information.

One of the most common ways a hacker gets a password is through what’s known as a phishing letter. Almost always a phishing letter will claim that the user has a problem and it needs to be corrected. A link is supplied to log into and enter the user name and password to verify that the user is who they say they are. After entering the sensitive information, a screen will come up and claim the “problem” is now “fixed.”

These emails get away with looking legitimate by using the logos of the company that they claim to be. Unfortunately all it takes to get a logo is to right click and save the image to a computer. It takes very little from there to make the email look real by inserting the logos that track back to the originating business. The gotchya to the unsuspecting user comes when they click on a link, telling them where to go to “fix” a problem. Often the unsuspecting victim doesn’t take the time to see where the link leads to. A phisher’s link will point to a site that may use the original site’s name in it, but it will only be part of the link. That’s the first tell that it’s not legit.

A lot of heartache and stress can be avoided by simply taking the time to look closely at the email. Check the headers of the email to see where it originated. The headers can be shown by going into the email program’s menus and finding “show headers.” Taking a few seconds can make all the difference.

Trusting a free anti-virus software program might not be what you had in mind when you went searching for a program to protect your computer and everything you have stored on it; but it might just be the right fit for you. The texture, color, and advantage of anti-virus software programs are as varied and numerous as there are people on Earth. Research on the subject is a necessity if you are looking for specifics. Specifics are a good thing and everyone who is looking for these programs will need to have certain items on their list of things they want out of an anti-virus software.

There are brand names and not so brand names that you can search for and then there are those that you just don’t know if you want to open the page to read more about them. One of the best ways to discover the best and worst of anti-virus software programs is to read customer reviews. There is nothing wrong with taking someone’s opinion and finding out if there are more like that out there. More than likely if more than one person has something bad to say on the subject then there has got to be a quirk with the program.

Don’t just put your faith in the reviews either. Search engines will help with this plight, also. Type the name in and find out a little more about your chosen one. Paying for an anti-virus program doesn’t always guarantee a better deal. Be picky when choosing, it might just save your computer. There is no shame is shopping around when it comes to all that personal information you have stored. Not to mention pictures, documents and all those little items that you might have forgotten about. Trusting an anti-virus software program doesn’t have to be a headache. Being informed is a good way to start.

Perhaps you’re a very diligent person. You update drivers when necessary. You even get out a can of compressed air to clean the dust out of your keyboard. However, how often do you check the privacy settings on your computer? This may be an important area you’re overlooking and it could have serious implications for you and the private information you store on your computer.

Begin by investigating the privacy settings of your web browser. Most browsers come with a default setting, giving you a minimum level of protection. However, you may prefer to set a higher threshold of protection especially if you are on a network doing a lot of file transfers and p2p sharing with software like Ares and Ares Galaxy. Remember that selecting a higher level of privacy may limit your ability to download files and even view certain websites. If you use more than one kind of browser, remember to check the privacy settings on each one.

Next, make sure your firewall is set to the appropriate level of privacy. This is your biggest protection against viruses and potential hackers. These people may want to troll your computer for personal information, your personal address book, and financial data. If you use the Windows operating system, it comes with a built-in firewall. However, you can find free and fee-for-use firewalls that provide additional protection.

Remember that you can choose your privacy settings when you use programs like Skype, Google, and iTunes. Keep in mind that these companies likely have default settings that allow them to access your information. If it’s important for you to keep your transactions private, make sure you choose enhanced privacy settings before initiating any activity with these programs.

Finally, if anyone else in your home or office uses your computer, there is a chance that person could alter your privacy settings. So, it’s a good idea to check them before you begin working on any shared computer.
